I found this rendering of my mother and gramma from art 2. I still like the detail of the lace and of my gramma's beaded blouse. It made me smile to take the photo of the rendering in the very same room that the original photo was taken, 20 years ago.

I also found this photo of the rendering of the IM band from 2 years ago. I gave the original rendering to the band, and was pleased to hear that they had mistaken it for a printed photo until they took a closer look.

First Semester Artist Statement

“What’s wrong with a little fantasy to show the way things ought to be? Why should I comply to the silly limits of real life?” Val Emmich

As an artist, I have grown to appreciate the ability to create artwork that reflects my idealistic personality. If I had my way, all colors would be pleasant, all work would be inspirational, and everyone would appreciate the beauty of simplicity. Throughout my time as an art student, I have found that I love to depict emotions through images or phrases that are simplistic in nature. I believe that sometimes simplicity is underrated, because it lacks the complexity that some think is the key to success. However, I have found that even the simplest of things are complex if portrayed in the right way.

Often times, an artist’s work is a parallel to their own personalities, which is why most of my work tends to illustrate romantic visions and sometimes my frustration with uncertainty. One of my favorite pieces is a self-portrait, titled “Simple I will be”, that is a combination of photography and hands-on application. I think that the colors and brush stroke effect on the photo depict my personality as both an artist and as a musician. I chose to add strips of blossom patterns to break up the melancholy mood of the piece, and show that although I am often reflective, I always have hope. Another favorite piece of mine is one titled “The Vintage Heart”, which was inspired by the idea that I am an “old soul”. I used several mediums to combine both my “mature” personality, with the reality that I am only a teenager.

At his point in my artistic career, I am merely beginning to find my niche in the art world. I have found that I am most enthusiastic about idealistic images, and hope to continue to strengthen my ability to express them. I believe that art is the perfect way to escape the “silly limits of real life”.

"Like Glass"
After several attempts at capturing running water from a hoes, while sitting in the muddy grass of my backyard, I finally got a shot I was happy with. What I love about this photo is the fact that you can almost see through the water as if it were glass, but the distortion also creates an interesting reflection of the sun and light streaks that indicate movement.

For this piece, my motive was to illustrate my first full-set show and the importance of writing music. I choose to gesso most of the writing, leaving only a few clear phrases, which I also illustrated in pencil. I wanted to express the relief I get through writing/performing through a messy medium, which I ironically had a hard time with. It took me a few tries to allow myself to splatter paint without holding back, which I think is similar to how I feel about songwriting.

The Vintage Heart. For this piece I painted "the vintage heart" on canvas, used vintage style photographs and pages of a book, and painted a human heart to get a vintage look.

Gesso Piece

This gesso piece is an illustration of my first show at a cafe in the city. I used watercolor splashes to depict the excitement and anxiety of that night, and I sketched significant images of my story.

Artist Trading Cards

I chose to do my artist trading cards in a purple/blue/green color scheme illustrating lyrics and short phrases. I focused on silhouettes of birds, feathers and plants.

Ad Council

I chose to have my ad council about following dreams and came up with the slogan, "wear your dreams on your sleeve". To reinforce the play on "heart of your sleeve" I cut out a paper heart and featured it in each photograph. The dreams include traveling, careers, and family. To establish the dreamlike mood I used several colored pinlights over my photos to brighten the background and give a dreamlike feel. I think light and color were the most effective in my ad campaigning.

The assignment was to take photos of ordinary bathroom and kitchen utensils. I chose to photograph my shampoos and lotions and brightened the image because i think the scents aim to make a person feel happy. I used the light and vibrant colors to emphasize this. In the kitchen, I photographed measuring spoons that are shaped like hearts. I like the reflection of the light on the water and the pattern of the spoon shapes.
